Rogue Core Update 2 Patch Notes: Every Change in the Big Overhaul

Combat Summary

  • Update 2 (build RC:EA:02.00.00) went live on September 2, 2026 — the difficulty-system overhaul.
  • Threat Levels 1–5 now control difficulty; Depth is purely content progression and no longer affects how hard the game hits.
  • Boss damage-triggered invulnerability phases are gone, stage waves officially stack on Threat Levels 4–5, and the server list is ungated.
  • New content: 7 Expenite upgrades, the Nuclear Optics artifact, a new artifact event, 4 Alterations, the LOK-1 Smart Rifle, the Voidkin Dominator enemy, and Molaktula’s own biome.
  • Three hotfixes followed: 02.00.01 (Sept 3), 02.01.00 (Sept 10), and 02.02.00 (Sept 21).

This is the full changelist in plain language, with links to our deep-dive guides on each major system. Everything below comes from the official Steam patch notes.

Threat Levels: Difficulty Reworked

The headline change. Update 2 introduced a 5-level difficulty scale — Threat Levels — controlling enemy count, swarm frequency, enemy HP and movement, aggression and projectile speed, and overall damage. Depth was stripped of its difficulty role entirely: it is now just the content progression tree. Pick your Depth for what you fight, your Threat Level for how hard it fights back.

Wave Stacking Goes Official (Threat Levels 4–5)

Stage waves can now overlap on Threat Levels 4–5. This used to be a bug — now it is an official feature and the game’s true endgame ceiling. Surviving stacked waves demands crowd control, positioning, and builds that function when the screen fills.

Bosses: No More Invulnerability Phases

Damage-triggered boss invulnerability is removed. Instead, Gatekeepers use short blocks or blockable attacks (building on the counterattack system from Update 1.2). Fights are now about reading the boss and sustaining damage through real openings, not waiting out a phase timer.

New Arsenal: LOK-1, Nuclear Optics, and 7 Expenite Upgrades

  • LOK-1 Smart Rifle — the Engineer’s smart rifle from Deep Rock Galactic joins the standard weapon pool, with auto-lock adapted to Rogue Core’s upgrade and damage systems. Full guide: LOK-1 Smart Rifle Guide.
  • Nuclear Optics artifact — enemies inside your flashlight beam take 30 Radiation damage per second. Yes, the flashlight build is real. Full guide: Nuclear Optics Artifact Guide.
  • 7 new Expenite upgrades with an elemental focus: Spark-Booster, Grid-Shock, Weathering Blast, Icy Shrapnel, Icicle Strike, Concussive Shot, and Frostbane. Full guide: 7 New Expenite Upgrades Explained.
  • New artifact event — reactivate a classified experiment for an artifact reward (not Expenite).

New Enemy: Voidkin Dominator

A tankier, long-range evolution of the Voidkin Drifter. Its projectiles leave lingering volatile Rift energy, and it explodes on death — the kill is only half the fight. Full guide: Voidkin Dominator Guide.

Four New Alterations

Update 2 added four run modifiers: High Stakes (better RNG luck, less Expenite), Siege Engines (enemies at half speed with double HP), Headhunter (no Expenite veins — all enemies drop Expenite), and Death Mitosis (Corespawn split into two smaller enemies on death; enemies have less HP). Full guide: All 4 New Alterations Ranked.

Molaktula Gets Its Own Biome

Each of the three Gatekeepers now has its own biome on its Depth — Molaktula finally has a home turf instead of sharing. Expect denser, more themed fights built around each boss. Full guide: Molaktula Biome Guide.

Server Browser Ungated

You can now join missions at Depths and biomes you have not unlocked yet through the server list (hosting still requires unlocking the Depth yourself). Update 2.01.00 later added Threat Level filtering to the server list. Full guide: Server Browser Guide.

Balance Changes Worth Knowing

  • Fusion Rod now works with ammo and clip upgrades (a genuine buff).
  • Devastator loses double-mag, Hammercaster loses Burst Fire, Hurricane loses Salvo Module, and the Breach Cutter’s “Return to Sender” is temporarily removed.
  • Impact Axes return to the Grenade Locker.
  • Shotguns no longer multi-trigger Lucky Shot; pickaxe kills no longer slow you.
  • Rifts now spawn and follow per wave.
  • The Expenite upgrade cost cap is replaced with +100 scaling cost past the soft cap.
  • Alpha Clearance is auto-granted to all Reclaimers — new players are no longer locked out of Expenite Events or the Grenade Locker early.
  • The Depth 4 tooltip now reads “coming in Update 3.”

Hotfixes After Launch

  • RC:EA:02.00.01 (Sept 3) — Gotoorak teleport fix, Reaperworm animation fix, Lucky Shot accidentally set to 100% (corrected to 50%), Headhunter Expenite drops during red hostile readings, memory-leak backport.
  • RC:EA:02.01.00 (Sept 10) — “Enemies Drop Expenite” alteration tuning (consistent drops across Threat Levels and team sizes), Expenite-derived XP tuning so it cannot become the main XP source, enemy spawn queuing instead of dropped spawns, server-list Threat Level filtering.
  • RC:EA:02.02.00 (Sept 21) — rejoin lobbies without restarting, Ellis soft-lock fix when the artifact pool runs dry in 4-player runs, Altar puzzle fixes, Engine Coolants added to the terrain scanner, mission sync fixes.
