Nuclear Optics Artifact: What It Does and Best Builds

Nuclear Optics is Update 2's new Rogue Core Artifact: enemies in your flashlight beam take 30 Radiation damage per second. Learn how to build around it.

Nuclear Optics Artifact: What It Does and Best Builds

Combat Summary

  • Official: Nuclear Optics is a new Artifact added in Update 2: enemies inside your flashlight beam take 30 Radiation damage per second.
  • Official: A new Artifact event was added alongside it — reactivate a classified experiment for an Artifact reward (not Expenite).
  • Tactical read: It turns your flashlight into a damage tool, rewarding beam uptime on priority targets. Build advice below is guidance, not official data.

Artifacts are Rogue Core’s run-defining pickups, and Nuclear Optics is the first one that weaponizes something you already do constantly: point your light at the problem.

What Nuclear Optics Does

While active, any enemy standing in your flashlight beam takes 30 Radiation damage per second. That is not burst damage — it is a damage-over-time aura projected wherever you look. Against tanky targets and dense packs, free damage for aiming your light is deceptively strong; against fast spread-out swarms, the beam can only cover so much.

Best Use Case

Nuclear Optics rewards a playstyle built around sustained tracking: keep the beam on the biggest threat while your weapons handle the rest. It pairs naturally with:

  • The new elemental upgrade pool. Update 2 added seven elemental Expenite upgrades (Spark-Booster, Grid-Shock, Weathering Blast, Icy Shrapnel, Icicle Strike, Concussive Shot, Frostbane). Radiation-flavored and proc-based effects stack multiplicatively with a second damage source you do not have to reload.
  • High-uptime weapons. Anything you can fire while steering the beam — the LOK-1 Smart Rifle’s auto-lock is the dream pairing, since it tracks targets while you aim the light.
  • Tanky frontline teammates. Let the Guardian hold the line while you paint priority targets with the beam.

How to Get Artifacts

Artifacts come from dedicated sources, not the general loot pool. Update 2 added a new Artifact event: find the classified experiment in a facility, reactivate it, and claim an Artifact reward. Note it pays out in Artifacts, not Expenite — run it for the pickup, not the economy.

Common Mistakes

  • Chasing beam uptime into bad positioning. The beam is not worth standing in a Rift pool or a stacked wave. Damage is free; your health is not.
  • Treating it as a primary damage source. 30 Radiation/sec is support damage. It finishes what your weapons start — it does not replace them.
  • Ignoring it on dark biomes. Ironically, the Artifact is strongest where you would be using the flashlight anyway. On bright maps the opportunity cost is higher.
