Rogue Core Threat Levels Explained: New Difficulty Guide
Update 2 replaced Rogue Core's old difficulty with five Threat Levels. Learn what each level changes, how Depth progression works now, and which level to pick.
Combat Summary
- Official: Update 2 (September 2) replaced the old difficulty system with five Threat Levels. Depth is now purely a content progression tree and no longer affects difficulty.
- Official: Higher levels scale enemy count, swarm frequency, enemy HP and movement, aggression, attack frequency, projectile speed, and overall damage.
- Official: On Threat Levels 4–5, stage waves can stack — previously a bug, now an official feature and the new endgame ceiling.
Threat Levels are Rogue Core’s difficulty setting, picked per mission. Before Update 2, difficulty was tangled up with Depth progression; now the two are separate. Here is how the system works.
What Each Threat Level Changes
Per the official Update 2 patch notes, raising the Threat Level increases: enemy count, swarm frequency, enemy HP, enemy movement speed, aggression, attack frequency, projectile speed, and overall damage dealt to Reclaimers. It is a broad power dial, not a single stat bump — TL3 does not just hit harder, it throws more bodies at you faster.
Depth Is Progression Now, Not Difficulty
This is the big mental-model shift. Depth determines which content you see — biomes, encounters, and which Gatekeeper caps the run. Threat Level determines how hard it hits. You can now take a low Depth at a high Threat Level for a brutal short run, or push deep at a comfortable level while learning new biomes.
Wave Stacking at Threat Levels 4–5
On TL4 and TL5, stage waves can stack on top of each other. This used to be a bug; Ghost Ship Games made it an official feature. Stacked waves are the current endgame difficulty ceiling, and the community is actively theorycrafting builds that survive them. If your squad is not coordinating crowd control and revive coverage, TL4 will teach you fast.
Which Threat Level Should You Pick
- TL1–2: Learning runs, new weapons, testing builds. Pick these while you learn a new Depth’s biome and Gatekeeper patterns.
- TL3: The standard challenge for a coordinated squad with tuned builds.
- TL4–5: Endgame. Expect stacked waves and escalating spawns. Do not queue these with randoms unless your build is proven.
Patch Notes
- September 10 hotfix: The server list gained Threat Level filtering, so you can find squads at your level. Expenite drop amounts from the Enemies Drop Expenite alteration were also made consistent across Threat Levels and team sizes.
- Coming in Update 3: Depth 4 and a fourth Gatekeeper will extend the progression tree — and almost certainly the difficulty ceiling with it.
