Rogue Core Depths 1-3 Guide: Progression, Bosses and Unlocks
How Rogue Core's Depths 1-3 work: the content progression system, each Depth's Gatekeeper boss fight, biome unlocks, and where Depth 4 and Update 3 fit in.
Combat Summary
The direct answer: Rogue Core has three playable Depths, and Depth is a content progression ladder — not difficulty. Each Depth is a set of missions ending in a Gatekeeper boss fight, and since Update 2 each Gatekeeper has its own dedicated biome. Depth 1 teaches you the boss counterattack system, Depth 2 drops you into Molaktula’s home biome, and Depth 3 is the current endgame with the hardest Gatekeeper and the harshest long-mission health scaling. You unlock higher Depths by clearing the previous one’s boss, but Update 2’s ungated server list lets you join missions at Depths you have not unlocked yet (hosting your own still requires the unlock). Depth 4 stays locked until Update 3, which Ghost Ship has targeted — not dated — for late October / early November 2026.
Depth Is Progression, Not Difficulty
Official (Update 2, September 2026): Depth became purely a content progression tree. Difficulty moved entirely to the separate Threat Levels 1–5 system. This is the single most misunderstood split in the game — players coming back from launch still treat Depth 3 as “the hard mode.” It is not: you can run Depth 1 on Threat Level 5 and it will be harder than Depth 3 on Threat Level 1. Our Threat Levels 1-3 climb guide covers the difficulty side of the game; this guide covers the ladder itself.
Depth 1: Learn the Gatekeeper Pattern
Community-tested: the Depth 1 Gatekeeper is a teaching fight. The counterattack mechanics introduced in Update 1.2 are all present, but tuned so you learn the loop — bait the attack, punish the opening, repeat. New players should treat Depth 1 as school: the habits you build here (reading boss tells, not greedily dumping damage into counterattack windows) carry through the entire game. The full boss mechanics are in our Gatekeeper boss guide.
Depth 2: Molaktula’s Home Turf
Official (Update 2): each Gatekeeper now has its own biome on its Depth — and Molaktula finally got its own. In Update 1 it temporarily shared The Ramok’s new Core biome; now the arena itself fights you, with hazards built into the boss space on top of the counterattacks. Our Molaktula biome guide covers the hazards and enemy mix. Practical takeaway: Depth 2 is where positioning starts mattering as much as damage.
Depth 3: The Current Endgame
Community-tested: the Depth 3 Gatekeeper is the hardest of the three, and this is where the re-tuned health scaling for long missions bites hardest. Bring ammo discipline and a real plan for the adds — the fight punishes the “just shoot the boss” instinct that Depth 1 lets you get away with. Official (Update 2): the difficulty rework details are in our Update 2 breakdown.
How Unlocks Work
Official (Update 2): the server browser is ungated — you can join missions at Depths and biomes you have not unlocked. Hosting your own run at a Depth still requires unlocking it by clearing the previous Depth’s Gatekeeper. If a friend is ahead of you, join their lobby instead of grinding solo: you will see the later content and keep your own progression intact.
Depth 4 and Update 3
Official: Depth 4 is visible in-game but locked, and since Update 2 its tooltip reads “coming in Update 3.” A fourth Gatekeeper is confirmed in development; no name has been announced, and forum “leaks” are guesses. Official wording: Update 3 is targeted for late October / early November 2026 — a target window, not a locked date. For the full picture, see our Depths progression overview covering Depth 4 and everything confirmed about Update 3.
