Rogue Core Gatekeeper Boss Guide: Counterattacks and How to Win
Every Gatekeeper boss in Rogue Core now fights back with counterattacks that can block your attacks outright. Learn how the Update 1.2 boss rework changed each fight and how to win.
Combat Summary
- Official: Since Update 1.2 (July 9, 2026), every Gatekeeper in Rogue Core has counterattacks — defensive reactions that reduce pressure on the boss and can temporarily block some or all of your incoming attacks while the boss pressures your squad.
- Official: Boss health scaling was re-tuned for 5- and 6-stage missions, and Risk Vector spawns can now join the enemy pool assisting Gatekeepers during boss fights.
- Official: Update 2 (September 2, 2026) removed damage-triggered boss invulnerability phases — boss fights now use short blocks or blockable attacks instead of hard invuln windows.
- The short answer: Stop treating Gatekeepers like damage sponges. Watch for the counterattack wind-up, stop feeding shots into a block, burst during open windows, and deal with Risk Vector adds before they pin your team down.
Should you burn your heavy cooldowns the moment the fight starts? No. Since Update 1.2, Gatekeepers punish greedy damage — a counterattack can eat your entire burst while the boss keeps hitting you. The winning pattern is patience: bait the counterattack, punish the recovery, and repeat.
What the Update 1.2 Boss Rework Changed
Lead Game Designer Mike broke the rework down in the July 9, 2026 “Beefy bosses” announcement, and the headline change is the one this guide is about: Gatekeepers no longer just absorb your damage. Every Gatekeeper now has counterattacks that actively reduce pressure on itself — attacks that push back, punish, or temporarily block your incoming fire while the boss keeps pressuring your Reclaimers.
Three other boss-fight changes shipped in the same update:
- Health scaling re-tuned. Boss HP was adjusted to keep pace with player power on 5- and 6-stage missions. If you over-geared the early boss fights at launch, the re-tuned scaling is why they feel chunkier now.
- Risk Vector assists. Enemy spawns from your active Risk Vectors can now join the pool assisting Gatekeepers mid-fight. The boss no longer fights alone.
- Reaperworm pressure (mission-level). About 30 seconds after the first Reaperworms appear, more spawn over time at a rate that scales with player count — the game’s way of telling you to finish the boss fight and get on the elevator.
Official: Update 2 then removed damage-triggered invulnerability phases entirely. Instead of a hard “your damage does nothing now” window, bosses do short blocks or blockable attacks. Practically: you waste less time completely unable to act, but you need to read each block and play around it.
The Three Gatekeepers (No Spoilers on Names)
Rogue Core launched with three Gatekeepers, and since Update 2 each one has its own biome on its Depth — no two Gatekeepers share home turf anymore. Ghost Ship has not published individual boss names, so this guide refers to them the way the game does: by Depth.
- The Depth 1 Gatekeeper — your introduction to counterattacks. The mechanics are the same as the later bosses, but the fight is tuned so you learn the pattern: bait, punish, repeat.
- The Depth 2 Gatekeeper — Molaktula’s boss. Molaktula got its own dedicated biome in Update 2 (“the Gatekeeper’s home turf”), so expect the arena itself to fight you: hazards built into the fight space on top of the counterattacks. Our Molaktula biome guide covers the arena side of the fight.
- The Depth 3 Gatekeeper — the hardest of the three at launch, and the one where the re-tuned health scaling for long missions bites hardest. Bring ammo discipline and a plan for the adds.
Official: A 4th Gatekeeper is confirmed in development and will unlock Depth 4 — but it is not here yet, and no name has been announced. Do not believe any “leaked boss names” you see on forums; Ghost Ship has published none.
How Counterattacks Work (and How to Beat Them)
The official description is the whole ruleset we have: counterattacks reduce pressure on the boss and can temporarily block some or all player attacks while the boss keeps pressuring you. Everything below is built on that, plus in-game verification of how the fights play out.
In-game verified: A counterattack is a read, not a guess. The Gatekeeper telegraphs it — a stance shift, a glow, a sudden turn toward whoever is dealing the most damage. The moment you see it, the correct play is to stop feeding damage into the block. Shots eaten by a counterattack are ammo and time wasted; worse, on some patterns the block happens while the boss counter-pressures, so standing in the open “to keep uptime” gets you hit twice over.
- Rule 1: Respect the wind-up. When the Gatekeeper shifts into a counterattack stance, reposition. Dodge the follow-up pressure attack; do not stand still trying to out-DPS a block.
- Rule 2: Punish the recovery. Every counterattack ends. The window right after — while the boss resets to its normal attack cycle — is your burst window. This is when heavy weapons and damage upgrades earn their keep.
- Rule 3: Never dump cooldowns into a block. Update 2 made bosses use short blocks instead of long invuln phases, which makes it tempting to “just keep shooting.” Do not. A short block still eats your burst if you fire into it; wait half a second and fire into the open window instead.
- Rule 4: Adds are part of the boss fight now. Risk Vector spawns can reinforce the Gatekeeper. A squad that ignores the adds to tunnel the boss will get flanked and bled out. Assign one player to add duty — or kite the adds into the boss’s own attack patterns.
Community-tested: Squads that call out counterattacks (“blocking, hold fire”) clear bosses noticeably faster than squads where everyone shoots on instinct. The single biggest DPS loss in Gatekeeper fights is not missing shots — it is shots absorbed by counterattacks.
Difficulty Matters: Threat Levels and Boss Fights
Update 2 separated difficulty from Depth: Threat Levels (1–5) now control enemy count, swarm frequency, HP, aggression, and damage, while Depth is purely content progression. That means the same Gatekeeper is a different fight on Threat Level 1 versus Threat Level 5 — and on Threat Levels 4–5, stage waves can stack, which can flood a boss arena mid-fight.
Our Threat Levels explained guide covers which level to pick. For boss fights specifically: learn the counterattack patterns on Threat Level 1–2, then take the same knowledge up the ladder. The tells do not change; the punishment for ignoring them does.
Common Mistakes
- Shooting through counterattacks. The single most common failure. If the boss is blocking, your ammo is better spent on adds or held for the recovery window.
- Bringing a 4-stage loadout to a 6-stage boss. Health scaling is re-tuned for long missions — if you are under-upgraded when you reach the Gatekeeper, the fight becomes a war of attrition you lose. Spend Expenite before the boss gate, not after.
- Ignoring the Risk Vector modifier list. If you stacked enemy-adding Risk Vectors for the mission, they will show up in the boss fight — and stacking them has, in Ghost Ship’s words, “very real consequences.” Our Risk Vectors tier list ranks which ones to fear.
- Forgetting Update 2 removed invuln, not damage. The boss can still kill you. The removal of invulnerability phases means your windows are better, not that the boss is weaker.
