Rogue Core Headhunter Guide: No Expenite Veins, All Enemy Drops

How does the Headhunter alteration work in Rogue Core? No Expenite veins means every kill pays — here's how to farm drops efficiently, dodge the pickup tedium, and build around it.

Rogue Core Headhunter Guide: No Expenite Veins, All Enemy Drops

Combat Summary

  • Official: The Headhunter alteration removes all Expenite veins from the mission and makes every enemy drop Expenite instead. Your income shifts entirely from mining to killing.
  • The short answer: Play Headhunter like a bounty hunter, not a miner. Prioritize dense fights and wave-heavy rooms, vacuum up drops between waves, and remember the September 10 hotfix made drop amounts consistent across Threat Levels and team sizes — solo low-difficulty runs finally get a fair share.
  • Community-tested: The big annoyance is pickup tedium — shards fall into unreachable terrain, worst in Hollow Bough and Crystal Caves. Farm in open rooms and grab drops before moving on; don’t backtrack into the void for three shards.
  • In-game verified: Expenite Events still spawn and pay out on Headhunter runs — the alteration only kills veins, not events.

Of the four new Alterations Update 2 added, Headhunter is the one that rewrites your instincts. No veins means your pickaxe is dead weight and every fight is payday — but only if you play the economy correctly.

What Headhunter Changes

Official: Per the Update 2 patch notes, Headhunter is one of four new Alterations (alongside High Stakes, Siege Engines, and Death Mitosis — see our full Alterations guide for the other three). Its rule: no Expenite veins spawn; all enemies drop Expenite on death.

Official (hotfix, Sept 10): The “Enemies Drop Expenite” economy was rebalanced — drop amounts are now consistent across Threat Levels and team sizes. Before this fix, solo players on low difficulties were getting almost nothing. Post-fix, Headhunter is fair at every difficulty.

Speculation: Headhunter is also the clearest preview of where the game is heading — the Update 3 experimental branch is testing enemies-dropping-Expenite as a core feature, not just an alteration. Learning Headhunter now is learning the game’s likely future. (See our coverage of the expenite-on-kills controversy for why the community is split on it.)

How to Play It

Community-tested adjustments from Headhunter regulars:

  1. Seek out fights, don’t avoid them. On a normal run you sometimes skip optional combat to save time. On Headhunter, every skipped fight is skipped income. Swarm rooms and wave events are your payday — lean into them.
  2. Farm where drops are reachable. Shards that fall into pits, off ledges, or behind geometry are gone. Fight in open rooms with flat floors whenever you have the choice, and scoop drops between waves, not during them — dying for three shards is the classic Headhunter mistake.
  3. Threat Level matters differently. Higher Threat Levels mean more enemies, more HP, and now — thanks to the hotfix — consistent per-kill drops. TL 2–3 is the sweet spot for most squads: enough enemies to fund your build without the wave-stacking punishment of TL 4–5 (see our wave-stacking survival guide).
  4. Build for killing, not mining. Mining speed and vein-finding perks are wasted slots on Headhunter. Our best weapons tier list ranks the meta picks — anything that clears crowds fast is S-tier here.
  5. Events still count. Expenite Events spawn normally under Headhunter and are still the best burst income in the game. Don’t skip them just because your income model changed.

The Pickup-Tedium Problem (and Workarounds)

The community’s loudest Headhunter complaint — the same one driving the experimental expenite-on-kills debate — is pickup tedium: bending over for every shard breaks the game’s pacing, and shards landing in unreachable terrain (Hollow Bough and Crystal Caves are the worst offenders) feel like the game stealing your wages.

Workarounds that actually help:

  • Clear-then-collect rhythm: kill everything, then sweep the room in one pass. Don’t chase individual drops mid-fight.
  • Fight near the path: when you have a choice of engagement, take the fight closer to where you’re already going.
  • Let small shards go. Obsessing over every last shard costs more time than the Expenite is worth. Big fights fund your build; strays are noise.

Speculation: The most-requested fix — auto-awarding kill Expenite straight to your inventory instead of ground drops — is exactly what the experimental branch may be testing. If it ships in Update 3, Headhunter’s biggest flaw disappears overnight.

Bottom Line

Headhunter turns Rogue Core into a bounty-hunting game: skip nothing that fights back, farm where you can reach the loot, and let the hotfix-era drop consistency fund your build. Master it now — the Update 2 meta is pointing straight at this economy.
