Expenite on Kills: The Change Dividing Rogue Core Players
The Rogue Core experimental branch is testing Expenite drops from killed enemies. Here is what the change does and why the community is split.
Combat Summary
- Official: The experimental branch is currently testing enemies dropping Expenite by default. This is a test, not a confirmed Update 3 feature.
- Community: Steam forum threads are split — one argues the change hurts the game, another says it feels great. Both sides are players, not developers.
- Context: The Headhunter alteration already does this (no Expenite veins; all enemies drop Expenite), so there is a live preview of the design.
A quiet experiment on the Rogue Core experimental branch has sparked the loudest community debate since the Threat Levels rework: what if killing enemies dropped Expenite by default?
What Is Being Tested
Enemies dropping Expenite (official, experimental only). The experimental branch — the public test build gated behind a Discord role — is currently testing a change where enemies drop Expenite by default. Expenite is Rogue Core’s run currency, normally mined from veins and spent at Outpost vendors and on upgrades.
This is not confirmed for Update 3. Experimental branch features are tests. Ghost Ship Games has a history of testing ideas publicly and then adjusting or shelving them based on feedback.
Why Players Are Divided
The case against (community). A Steam forum thread titled “the case against expenite on kills” argues the change undermines the mining fantasy and the risk-reward of vein runs — if kills pay out, the incentive to push for veins and manage the pickaxe loop weakens.
The case for (community). A counter-thread, “I like Expenite drops from enemies,” argues it smooths out bad RNG runs where veins never spawn near your path, and rewards aggressive play instead of punishing it.
The Headhunter precedent (in-game verified). The Headhunter alteration already implements exactly this tradeoff: no Expenite veins spawn, but every enemy drops Expenite, plus one guaranteed Artifact. Players who want to judge the design can run Headhunter today and see how an all-kills economy feels.
What Happens Next
Watch the experimental branch patch notes and the Steam forums. If the test survives to a full patch, expect it in or around Update 3. If the forums keep burning, expect a rework. Either way, this is Early Access working as intended: test in public, argue in public, ship what survives.
Verification status: official experimental branch + community forums. Updated September 30, 2026.
