Rogue Core Cavern Formations and Entrance Rooms Guide
Update 2 added 4 new facility entrance rooms and 15 new cavern formations to Rogue Core, and reworked cave connections. How the new layouts change navigation, routes, and fights.
Combat Summary
Official: Update 2 added 4 new facility Entrance Rooms and 15 new Cavern Formations, and reworked how cave connections generate (Steam patch notes RC:EA:02.00.00). In plain terms: the rooms you walk into and the tunnels between them look and play differently now. Entrance rooms are the transition spaces where a facility begins — the first room you see on a new floor, which sets the tone for everything after it. The 15 new cavern formations are new cave shapes, features, and layouts in the generated terrain. And the connection rework changed how those pieces link together, which changes route planning in every mission. If your mental map of Rogue Core’s caves was built before Update 2, parts of it are now wrong — this guide rebuilds it.
What Entrance Rooms Are (and Why 4 New Ones Matter)
Every floor of a facility starts somewhere. The Entrance Rooms are your first look at the new depth: the elevator (or the barrier breach) deposits you there, your squad gets its bearings, and — critically — the first fight of the floor often finds you while you are still reading the room.
Official: Update 2 added 4 new entrance room layouts. The patch notes don’t name them, so think in terms of what entrance rooms do:
- They set the first engagement. In-game verified: enemies don’t wait for you to be ready. An entrance room with good sightlines lets your squad spot the first wave early; a cramped one means the fight starts at arm’s length. Knowing which of the new layouts you spawned into tells you how the first 60 seconds will go.
- They anchor your route. The entrance room is the one fixed reference point on a procedurally generated floor. Community-tested: experienced players plan their floor route as “loops out from the entrance room” — clear one direction, return, clear the next. The 4 new layouts change what those loops look like.
- They hold early loot. Entrance Rooms frequently contain the floor’s first supply or equipment touchpoints. In-game verified: checking the entrance room thoroughly before pushing deeper is cheap — you are already there — and it front-loads your power for the rest of the floor.
Community observations still being compiled: the community has not yet published a definitive named catalog of the 4 new entrance layouts with screenshots. If you spawn into a layout you don’t recognize, slow down for 10 seconds and read it before committing to a direction — that habit is worth more than any catalog.
The 15 New Cavern Formations
Official: 15 new Cavern Formations arrived with Update 2. Cavern formations are the generated cave features between and around facility structures — the tunnels, chambers, vertical shafts, and natural obstacles that make up the connective tissue of every mission. Serious Exploration of the new layouts pays off: the players finding the most value are the ones mapping unfamiliar corners instead of speedrunning old paths.
What new formations mean in practice:
- New sightlines. Some formations open up long views across chambers; others break space into tight pockets. In-game verified: long sightlines favor ranged builds and the LOK-1’s auto-lock; tight pockets favor area damage and the pickaxe. Read the formation, then pick your weapon for the room instead of the other way around.
- New verticality. Formations with height differences create the classic high-ground dynamic: enemies below you are easier to hit and harder for them to reach. Community-tested: in the new formations, the team that takes the high ground first usually wins the room without spending health.
- New chokepoints. Narrow formations between chambers are natural funnels. In-game verified: enemies path toward you in streams through narrow connections — which is exactly the geometry where grenades, elemental procs, and the new Nuclear Optics beam do their best work.
- New dead ends (and fewer of them). The connection rework changed how dead ends generate. Some old “always check the back corner” habits are outdated; some new formations hide loot in places the old generator never used.
Speculation: with 15 new formations in the pool, the effective variety of generated floors is much larger than the raw count suggests — formations combine, so the number of distinct floor feels multiplies. Expect route guides to take a while to catch up.
The Cave-Connection Rework
Official: Update 2 reworked cave-connection generation. This is the quietest change in the patch notes and one of the most impactful: it changes which rooms connect to which, and how.
Why it matters for your runs:
- Old shortcuts may be gone. If you had a favorite “always go left at the second junction” habit, verify it still works. Community-tested: several players report that familiar floors now connect differently — the rework is real, not cosmetic.
- Loop routes got better. In-game verified: the rework favors connected loops over long dead-end branches, which means less backtracking. That’s a direct buff to the mission timer: less walking, more fighting and mining per minute.
- Retreat paths changed. The flip side of new connections is new escape geometry. When a fight goes bad, your retreat now runs through rooms that didn’t exist in the old generator. Community-tested: the players dying least on Threat Levels 4–5 are the ones who glance at their retreat path before the fight starts, not during it.
Tactics for the New Layouts
- Scout before you commit. The first 10 seconds in any new formation should be observation, not action. Where are the exits? Where is the high ground? Where would a wave come from?
- Fight in the formation, not against it. Narrow formation? Funnel and grenade. Open chamber? Spread out and use range. Vertical shaft? Take the top and let gravity help.
- Mark the entrance room mentally. It is your rally point. If the squad gets split in a new formation, “back to the entrance” is the one callout everyone understands.
- Adjust for Threat Level. Official: Threat Levels 4–5 feature wave stacking. In the new formations, stacked waves in a chokepoint are a gift; stacked waves in an open chamber are a disaster. Your positioning matters more than your DPS when waves stack.
Exploration Value
The new formations aren’t just combat geometry — they’re loot geometry. In-game verified: Expenite veins, supply caches, and event sites (including Update 2’s classified experiment event) all spawn within the generated layout. New formations mean new spawn contexts: veins in places the old generator never put them, experiment sites tucked into new chamber shapes.
Community-tested: the players finding the most value in the new Cavern Formations are the ones who explore the unfamiliar corners instead of speedrunning the familiar path. The rework rewards curiosity — for now, while the layouts are still fresh, Exploration has a higher payoff than it will once every corner is mapped. Facilities as a whole feel larger and less predictable than before the rework.
The Bottom Line for Your Next Run
Update 2’s 4 Entrance Rooms, 15 Cavern Formations, and the connection rework add up to one message: your old mental map is outdated. Slow down for 10 seconds in each new room, fight the formation instead of ignoring it, keep the entrance room as your rally point, and let the new connections shorten your routes instead of confusing them. The caves changed — change with them.
Fact check
- Official: Update 2 added 4 new facility entrance rooms, 15 new cavern formations, and reworked cave-connection generation (Steam patch notes RC:EA:02.00.00). No official names for the new rooms or formations were published.
- Official: Threat Levels 4–5 feature wave stacking (previously a bug, now an official feature).
- Official: Update 2 added the classified experiment event, which rewards an Artifact.
- In-game verified: Enemies engage immediately on floor entry; the mission timer punishes slow play; enemies path through narrow connections in streams; veins and event sites spawn within generated layouts.
- Community-tested: Loop-out-from-entrance routing; high ground wins rooms; retreat-path awareness reduces deaths on high Threat Levels; familiar floors now connect differently after the rework.
- Speculation: Formation combinations multiply effective floor variety beyond the raw count of 15; Exploration payoff is temporarily elevated while layouts are fresh.
