Rogue Core Artifact Event Guide: Trigger the Classified Experiment

What is the classified experiment event in Rogue Core? How to find it, reactivate it, and claim an Artifact reward instead of Expenite — plus why Nuclear Optics makes this event a must-run.

Rogue Core Artifact Event Guide: Trigger the Classified Experiment

Combat Summary

  • Official: Update 2 added a new event type: a classified experiment you can reactivate mid-mission. The reward is an Artifact — not Expenite, which makes it one of the highest-value optional objectives in the game.
  • The short answer: During a mission, watch for the experiment site marker. Interact with the equipment to restart it, survive whatever the reactivation wakes up, and claim your free Artifact. Artifacts are permanent-for-the-run modifiers, so a good roll can carry your entire build.
  • In-game verified: The most talked-about reward so far is Nuclear Optics — enemies caught in your flashlight beam take 30 Radiation damage per second, effectively turning your light into a weapon. It pairs with any build and costs you nothing to pick up once the event is done.
  • Worth it? Yes — unless you’re on a tight timer run. The event costs one fight’s worth of effort and pays out a permanent run buff.

If you’ve been ignoring the odd machinery tucked into mission biomes, stop. The classified experiment event is Rogue Core’s version of a high-roller side objective: restart a dead experiment, deal with the consequences, and walk away with an Artifact instead of a pile of Expenite. In a game where every upgrade decision matters, free permanent run power is the best deal on the map.

What the Event Is (Official)

Per the Update 2 patch notes, the event is a new mid-mission objective: reactivate a classified experiment to earn an Artifact reward — explicitly not Expenite. That’s the entire official description, and it already tells you the important part: the game is trading you lasting build power for short-term risk, instead of the usual currency payout.

In-game verified: The event appears as a discoverable site during missions, separate from your main objective. It is optional — you can finish the mission without touching it — but unlike Expenite veins, it never competes with your main objective for time. You grab it when the fight situation allows.

How to Spot and Run It

Community-tested approach from players who’ve been running these since Update 2:

  1. Look for the site, not the timer. The experiment is a fixed location with machinery props — scan rooms as you move through the facility rather than rushing the objective. Facilities are big enough that you’ll miss it if you sprint.
  2. Reactivate at full strength. Interacting with the experiment starts its sequence — and loud machinery attracts attention. Clear nearby enemies first, make sure your squad knows you’re starting it, and keep your escape route in mind.
  3. Expect a fight. Reactivation sequences in Rogue Core draw waves. Treat this like a mini holdout: position with cover, save your grenades, and don’t start the sequence when you’re already limping.
  4. Claim the Artifact. Once the sequence completes, you get an Artifact — a permanent-for-this-run modifier. Unlike Expenite upgrades from the R.E.P.D., this one costs nothing. Take it, whatever it is.

Speculation: The exact Artifact pool for this event may not be every Artifact in the game — players report seeing run-modifying options consistently, but nobody has published a full drop table yet. If the pool is limited, expect that to be data-mined within weeks.

Why It’s Worth the Detour

Artifacts in Rogue Core are run-long modifiers — you don’t spend them, you don’t lose them on death, and they stack with your upgrade build. Nuclear Optics is the headline example: 30 Radiation damage per second to anything in your flashlight beam means your light is now free passive DPS against everything you point at. Not every reward will be that flashy, but the floor is “useful” and the ceiling is build-defining.

The math is simple: the event costs one extra fight; the payout lasts the whole run. The only builds that should skip it are pure speedruns where the timer is the real enemy.

Event vs. Expenite Events — Don’t Confuse Them

Rogue Core now has two different “event” systems, and the names are annoyingly similar:

  • The classified experiment (Artifact event): optional site, reactivate machinery, reward is an Artifact. Covered in this guide.
  • Expenite Events: mission-side objectives that pay out the Expenite currency (see our Expenite Events guide). Since Update 2 auto-grants Alpha Clearance, new players can access these from the start.

Official: The patch notes are explicit that the classified experiment’s reward is an Artifact and not Expenite — so if you show up expecting a currency dump, adjust your expectations upward. Artifacts are better.

Bottom Line

The classified experiment event is the single best risk-to-reward trade in the game right now: one extra fight for a free permanent Artifact. Learn the site markers, run it when your squad is healthy, and never walk past free power again.
