Driller Tunneling Tactics: Solving Problems With Your Drills

Master Driller tunneling tactics to overcome any obstacle on Hoxxes IV. Learn how strategic drilling solves navigation, combat, and mission objective challenges.

Driller Tunneling Tactics: Solving Problems With Your Drills

Combat Summary

  • Drills are tools for problem-solving: View every obstacle—be it terrain, a swarm, or a downed teammate—as a potential tunnel. Your drills are your primary method of interaction with the environment and the key to strategic advantage.
  • Mobility & Flanking: Master efficient Hoxxes Navigation by creating direct routes, escape tunnels, or flanking positions against entrenched foes. This is core to effective Driller Tactics.
  • Objective Control: Use Drill Usage to quickly access objectives, create choke points, or clear line-of-sight for your team. Every mission is easier with proper tunnel planning.

Management thinks in straight lines and prefab modules, but a Greybeard Driller knows true efficiency lies in bending the rock to our will. Your drills aren’t just for digging; they’re for problem-solving. Every challenge on Hoxxes IV, from a vertical shaft to an overwhelming swarm, presents an opportunity for a well-placed tunnel.

Best Use Case

Strategic drilling excels in nearly every scenario. Need to reach a high-up Morkite vein? Tunnel up. Teammate downed across a chasm? Drill a bridge. Overrun by a Glyphid swarm? Dig a defensive position or an escape route. Against Rival Tech fortifications, drills provide unparalleled access, bypassing force fields and turrets that stymie other classes. They are also crucial for quickly addressing Environmental Hazards like magma vents or unstable terrain.

While weapon choices are fluid, your drills should prioritize two things: fuel and speed. Consider upgrades that boost drilling speed and capacity, alongside cooldown reduction. Anything that makes your Drill Usage more efficient and sustainable is a good investment. Mobility perks that complement your ability to quickly reposition after drilling can also be invaluable.

Mission Tactics

  • On-Site Refining: This mission type is a Driller’s playground. Create direct pipeline routes, dig defensive tunnels around the pumpjacks, and clear paths to reduce travel time for the entire team. Your efficiency directly impacts mission success.
  • Point Extraction & Mining Expeditions: Quickly access hard-to-reach minerals. Identify choke points early and create tunnels that funnel enemies into kill zones for your team, or provide rapid extraction routes when things get dicey. Good Mission Strategy often starts with a Driller’s tunnel plan.
  • Elimination: Create arena-like spaces for Dreadnought fights, allowing your team to kite and focus fire. Tunneling under the Dreadnought for quick repositioning or escape is also a viable (if risky) tactic.

Common Mistakes

  • Aimless Drilling: Don’t just drill for the sake of it. Every tunnel should have a purpose, whether it’s for resource access, team mobility, or tactical advantage. Wasting fuel leaves you vulnerable.
  • Exposing the Team: Unplanned tunnels can lead your team into dangerous situations or split them up, making defense difficult. Communicate your intentions.
  • Ignoring Terrain: While you can drill through anything, some rock is tougher. Conserve fuel by using existing caves or softer ground when possible. Tunneling through solid Omen Modular Exterminator walls is a bad plan, for example.

When To Avoid It

While the Driller’s solution is often a tunnel, there are times to hold back. In very open, flat caves where cover is sparse, extensive tunneling might not offer the best advantage and could isolate you. Additionally, against certain enemies that excel in close quarters, creating tight tunnels for engagement can backfire. Know when a direct fight is better than trying to out-tunnel a Glyphid Praetorian in a confined space. Sometimes, a simpler approach is the correct Driller Tactics choice.
