Haunted Cave Modifier: How to Survive the Invulnerable Ghost

Combat Summary

  • The Haunted Cave Mission Modifier introduces an invulnerable Glyphid Exploder Ghost; do not waste ammo attempting to kill it.
  • Prioritize evasion, kiting, and objective completion. Your primary goal is to extract, not engage the Ghost.
  • Utilize team mobility and defensive tools like the Gunner’s Shield or Scout’s Grappling Hook to maintain distance and control the fight against other enemies.

Understanding the Haunted Cave Modifier

Management calls it “just a ghost,” but any veteran Miner knows the Haunted Cave modifier is a serious threat, especially for Greenbeards. This rare mission variant spawns a Glyphid Exploder Ghost that is completely invulnerable to all damage. Attempting to kill it is a guaranteed waste of precious ammunition and grenades, as some poor rookies discover the hard way. Its purpose isn’t to be killed, but to harass, disorient, and herd Miners into dangerous situations, making it a true Survival Guide challenge.

Survival Tactics Against The Ghost

Since you can’t fight it, you must outmaneuver it. The Ghost will relentlessly pursue the closest Miner. Use this to your advantage:

  • Kite & Rotate: Assign one Miner (often the Scout or Driller due to their mobility) to continuously kite the Ghost away from the main team. This allows the others to focus on objectives and actual threats.
  • Prioritize Objectives: Your primary goal in a Haunted Cave mission is always to complete the objective and get to the Drop Pod. Don’t engage in prolonged fights with swarms if the Ghost is pressuring you; move and clear on the go.
  • Environmental Awareness: Use tunnels, high ground, and obstacles to break line of sight and gain distance. The Ghost is fast but can sometimes get stuck on terrain temporarily.
  • Team Cohesion: Stick together. A lone Miner separated from the team is an easy target for the Ghost to push into a swarm or off a cliff. Gunner’s Shield can buy crucial seconds for revives or resupplies.

For a Haunted Cave mission, lean into mobility and defensive options:

  • Scout: Grappling Hook upgrades for cooldown and speed are paramount for kiting.
  • Driller: Drills for quick escape tunnels or line-of-sight breaks. Satchel Charges can clear paths, not fight the ghost.
  • Gunner: Shield Generator is your best friend. Drop it to create a safe zone for revives, resupplies, or to just shake the Ghost’s aggro for a moment.
  • Engineer: Platform Gun can create temporary high ground to escape or to block the Ghost’s direct path in tight spots.
  • Perks: Dash is highly recommended for all classes. Iron Will can give you a critical second chance if the Ghost corners you, and Heightened Senses can help avoid unseen threats while fleeing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake, as many new Miners make, is engaging the Ghost directly. It’s a waste of resources you’ll desperately need for the actual enemies.

  • Wasting Ammo: Do NOT shoot, grenade, or pickaxe the Ghost. It has no health bar because it cannot be damaged.
  • Panicking & Splitting: The Ghost thrives on fear. Maintain composure, call out its position, and don’t scatter from your team unless you’re intentionally kiting it away. A separated team is a doomed team.
  • Ignoring Objectives: Don’t get so focused on managing the Ghost that you forget to complete the mission. It’s a race against the clock and the ghost, not a boss fight.

When to Avoid This Modifier

If your team is struggling with basic hazard levels or lacks communication, a Haunted Cave Mission Modifier will only amplify those weaknesses. Consider skipping these missions if:

  • You’re running low on Credits for upgrades and cannot afford to fail.
  • Your team is new and still learning core mechanics.
  • You simply want a less stressful mining expedition. It’s a challenging modifier designed to test your tactical awareness and resource management skills. If you’re not ready, there’s no shame in picking another assignment.
