Deep Rock Galactic: Surviving the Average Swarm

Master Deep Rock Galactic swarm survival by prioritizing targets, managing crowd control, and leveraging team synergy. Every "average mission" can quickly escalate without proper tactics.

Deep Rock Galactic: Surviving the Average Swarm

Combat Summary

Average Deep Rock Galactic missions often devolve into chaotic swarms. To survive, you must prepare. Prioritize high-threat enemies, effectively manage crowd control, and maintain constant spatial awareness.

  • Focus Fire: Immediately eliminate ranged threats like Acid Spitters, Mactera, and Praetorians to reduce incoming damage.
  • Crowd Control (CC): Utilize all available CC from your team – slowing, freezing, stunning, and area denial – to manage overwhelming numbers.
  • Positioning: Avoid getting cornered. Use terrain to your advantage for kiting and creating choke points.

The difference between a successful extraction and a downed team often comes down to how well Miners handle the inevitable, overwhelming Swarms. Management rarely gives us proper intel, so it’s up to us to learn from experience. Don’t let the term “average mission” fool you; these can be the most dangerous if you’re not prepared for the onslaught.

Prioritize High-Threat Targets

During a swarm, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by sheer numbers. However, not all Glyphids are created equal. Prioritize special enemies that pose the highest immediate threat:

  • Ranged Attackers: Mactera Spawn, Tri-Jaws, Goo Bombers, Acid Spitters, Web Spitters. These must die first to preserve shields and health. Gunners can use their Ziplines for superior angles, while Scouts can quickly flank and eliminate them.
  • Explosive Threats: Glyphid Exploders and Bulk Detonators. Keep your distance, kite them away from objectives, and call out their presence.
  • Disablers: Menaces, Grabbers, Stingtails. These can pull Miners out of position and quickly lead to a team wipe, especially on Hazard 5.

Master Crowd Control

No Miner survives a true swarm alone. Effective crowd control is the backbone of any good Teamwork strategy. Driller’s Cryo Cannon, Engineer’s Turrets and Breach Cutter, Gunner’s Thunderhead Autocannon with Neurotoxin Coating, and Scout’s grenades (like the Pheromone Canister) are invaluable. Use them in concert to:

  • Slow Down: Keep enemies from reaching your position too quickly.
  • Freeze/Stun: Create windows for damage or revive opportunities.
  • Area Denial: Prevent large groups from pushing through choke points.

Effective Positioning and Kiting

Always be aware of your surroundings. Good Mission Tactics aren’t just about shooting; they’re about moving. Kiting, or drawing enemies away while damaging them, is a fundamental skill. Use your pickaxe to carve out defensive positions or escape routes. High ground often provides a tactical advantage, letting you funnel enemies and avoid being swarmed from all sides. Never let yourself get backed into a corner where you can’t move or dodge.

Leverage Team Synergy

Your team is your best weapon. Communicate threats, low health, and plan your retreats. A Gunner’s Shield is a lifeline, not a personal bubble. Engineers need to place turrets strategically. Drillers can create tunnels for escape or re-positioning. Scouts light up caves and pick off high-value targets. When every class plays to its strengths, even the most chaotic “average mission” becomes manageable. Neglecting team roles is how you get wiped.

Miner’s Chatter

The common sentiment among veteran Miners regarding the “average DRG mission” is that it’s often far from calm. The meme captures the reality: moments of peace are shattered by overwhelming waves of Glyphids. Miners consistently emphasize that solid communication, understanding class roles, and quick adaptation to changing threats are the real keys to survival, not just bigger guns.
