Deep Rock Galactic Overclock Core Drops Explained
Overclock Core drops in Deep Rock Galactic are truly random, not weighted by active class. Grind Deep Dives and Machine Events for guaranteed Overclocks.
Combat Summary
- Core drops are random: Overclock Core acquisition in Deep Rock Galactic is entirely random across all weapon and traversal tool Overclocks, regardless of the class you are currently playing. Management doesn’t care who you main.
- Guaranteed drops: Your best bet for guaranteed Overclocks is completing Weekly Deep Dives and participating in Machine Events.
- Focus the grind: While frustrating, the randomness encourages playing all classes. Target these specific missions for reliable Core Hunt progression.
Many Miners believe the system is rigged against them, especially when they don’t get Overclocks for their preferred class. This is a common misconception. The game’s DRG Mechanics for core acquisition are designed for a broad Progression path, not class-specific favoritism.
Core Drop Mechanics
Deep Rock Galactic’s Overclock system operates on a truly random distribution. When you complete a mission eligible for a core drop (e.g., Deep Dive stages, Machine Events), the game draws from the pool of all available weapon and traversal tool Overclocks across all four classes. It does not factor in your active class, your playtime on a specific class, or any other personal preference. This means getting multiple cores for a class you rarely play, or none for your main Driller, is just bad luck, not a systemic bias by Management.
Optimizing Your Core Hunt
Since the drops are random, your strategy should focus on maximizing the number of core opportunities.
- Weekly Deep Dives: Completing the full Weekly Deep Dives (both Normal and Elite) is non-negotiable. These offer three guaranteed Blank Cores and three Overclocks each week.
- Machine Events: Always activate and complete Machine Events found in regular missions. Each successful event allows you to infuse a Blank Core into an Overclock.
- Core Infusion: Once you have a Blank Core, you can infuse it at the end of any mission where you complete a Machine Event. This is where you actually choose to turn a Blank Core into a random Overclock.
- Forge Mastery: Don’t neglect crafting unwanted Overclocks or cosmetics at the Forge. This contributes to Forge Mastery, which periodically rewards Blank Cores and other items, indirectly feeding your Core Hunt.
Miner’s Chatter
The community discussion heavily reflects the frustration of random core drops. Many Miners expressed similar experiences of not getting Overclocks for their main class, leading to theories of a “pity timer” or class-weighting that simply doesn’t exist in the DRG Mechanics. The general consensus among veteran Miners is to simply keep grinding Deep Dives and Machine Events, as consistent play is the only true path to unlocking all Overclocks and completing your Progression.
