Deep Rock Galactic: Best Double Class Team Composition
Learn which Deep Rock Galactic classes offer the best synergy when doubled up in a four-dwarf team. Optimize your firepower and utility for any mission type.
Combat Summary
- Double Driller offers unmatched terrain manipulation and diverse crowd control (Cryo + Flamethrower), making it the most potent double-class setup for many missions.
- Double Engineer creates impenetrable defensive lines with overlapping turret coverage and area denial, excelling in static defenses like Salvage or Point Extraction.
- Avoid doubling a Scout unless specific speed-running or very niche objectives outweigh the loss of broader utility from another class.
Management limits us to four Dwarves per drop pod, but it doesn’t say they have to be four different Dwarves. Sometimes, doubling down on a specific class can unlock devastating synergy or fill critical gaps in your Team Composition. This isn’t about running identical builds; it’s about two Miners of the same class leveraging different weapon loadouts and utility to cover more ground.
Why Double Up?
Doubling a class allows for specialized roles within that class, enhancing a core strength of your team. For example, one Driller handles large groups with fire, while the other freezes high-priority targets. It also grants redundancy in critical utility, like having two sets of platforms or shields.
Double Driller: The Terrain Terror
This is often considered the strongest double-up. One Driller can focus on a Flamethrower build for raw damage and area denial, while the second runs a Cryo Cannon for freezing large threats or Mactera. Both have drills, meaning unparalleled mobility, instant bunkers, and swift extraction tunnels. No objective is safe from your rapid pathing, and swarms melt under the combined crowd control. Pair this with a decent Gunner for long-range threat removal and an Engineer for platforms, and you’ve got a formidable team.
Double Engineer: Turret Fortress & Area Denial
Two Engineers bring immense firepower and defensive capabilities. One can run a traditional Turret + Breach Cutter setup for wide-area clear, while the other might opt for a LOK-1 with a focused secondary like the PGL or Shard Diffractor for single-target damage. With two sets of platforms, you can cover more mineral veins, create stronger defensive perches, and build more complex structures for objective defense. This setup shines in missions with sustained defenses like Salvage Operations, Industrial Sabotage, or Point Extraction, where establishing a fortified position is key.
Double Gunner: Unyielding Firepower
While less versatile in utility than Drillers or Engineers, two Gunners provide sustained, overwhelming firepower and overlapping shield coverage. One Gunner can bring a Minigun for constant suppression, while the other uses the Autocannon for splash damage. The key here is staggered use of their Shields, allowing for nearly perpetual safe zones against heavy swarms or Dreadnoughts. Two sets of ziplines also make traversing vertical terrain much faster. This duo is excellent for high-Hazard missions where raw damage output and survivability are paramount, especially when paired with a good Scout for mineral collection and critical target elimination.
Double Scout: Light & Looter (Situational)
Doubling a Scout is generally the least recommended option. While two flare guns can completely illuminate even the largest caves, and two grappling hooks allow for incredible speed, the primary utility of a Scout – mineral collection, high-priority target execution, and illumination – is often covered effectively by one. Doubling a Scout means you’re sacrificing a slot that could have been filled by a Gunner’s shield, an Engineer’s turrets, or a Driller’s terrain manipulation. It can work for highly coordinated teams focused on speed-running or specific objectives where extreme mobility and lighting are critical, but it requires careful planning to avoid feeling redundant.
Miner’s Chatter
The community overwhelmingly agrees that doubling Driller or Engineer offers the most significant practical advantages due to their diverse utility and weapon synergies. Many Miners point to the terrain manipulation and crowd control options of two Drillers as game-changing. Double Engineers are praised for making defensive objectives trivial. Doubling a Gunner is seen as viable for pure combat power, but often less transformative than the other two. The general consensus is to avoid doubling a Scout unless it’s for a very specific, coordinated strategy, as their utility quickly becomes redundant. The discussion highlights that varied weapon loadouts are crucial for any successful double-class Team Composition.
