How to Use Exploder Glyphids for Area Denial

Learn to turn Exploder Glyphids into an asset for area control and damage against other foes. Master their timing and positioning to clear swarms efficiently.

Combat Summary

  • Triggering Exploder Glyphids near other enemies creates effective area denial and clears weaker swarms.
  • Their detonations maximize damage efficiency against concentrated targets, saving ammunition and valuable time.
  • Prioritize timing and positioning to control their explosion radius, turning a threat into a tactical asset without friendly fire.

Management wants us to dispose of every threat, but a smart Miner knows when to turn the enemy’s own weaknesses against them. Exploder Glyphids are a prime example. These glowing, self-destructing pests can be a menace, but their explosive nature can be your greatest asset if used correctly. Instead of simply eliminating them as they approach, learn to weaponize their aggression for superior Glyphid Control.

Best Use Case

This tactic shines brightest when you’re facing overwhelming numbers. Use Exploders when:

  • Dense Swarms: Groups of Grunts, Swarmers, or even Acid Spitters are clumped together. Detonating an Exploder in the middle of such a group is far more efficient than individual shots.
  • Choke Points: When enemies are funneling through a narrow passage, a well-timed Exploder detonation can clear the path and create a temporary barrier of fear.
  • Weakening Tankier Foes: While not instantly lethal to larger Glyphids, an Exploder blast can significantly soften up a Praetorian or Oppressor for your team to finish.

Mission Tactics

Mastering Exploder Glyphids requires precision and environmental awareness:

  • Targeting: Don’t shoot an Exploder as soon as you see it. Wait for it to close the distance on other enemies. Aim for a quick kill shot when it’s perfectly positioned to maximize collateral damage.
  • Sound Cues: Exploders have a distinct high-pitched whine. Use this auditory intel to track their movement and anticipate their approach, preparing your shots or defensive maneuvers.
  • Environmental Control: Walls, corners, and natural tunnels on Hoxxes IV are your friends. Lure Exploders into these tight spaces where their blast radius is contained, amplifying their destructive power on clustered targets.
  • Team Communication: Call out Exploder targets. A well-placed Engineer’s Sentry, Driller’s C4, or a combined volley of fire can turn a single Exploder into a tactical nuke for effective combat tactics.

Common Mistakes

Even experienced Miners can slip up with Exploder usage:

  • Premature Detonation: Shooting an Exploder far away from other enemies wastes its potential. It’s just a regular kill then.
  • Too Close for Comfort: Letting an Exploder get too close before detonating risks significant shield and health damage to yourself or teammates. Keep a safe distance.
  • Ignoring the Call: Not reacting to a teammate’s callout on an Exploder’s position can lead to unwanted friendly fire or missed opportunities for combined area denial.

When To Avoid It

While powerful, this tactic isn’t always viable:

  • Low Health/Shields: If your health is critical, prioritize eliminating the Exploder immediately to prevent self-damage, even if it’s not perfectly positioned.
  • Friendly Fire Risk: Never detonate an Exploder if a teammate is within its blast radius. That’s a quick way to earn a trip to the Drop Pod’s infirmary.
  • Sparse Enemies: If only a lone Grunt is near an Exploder, it’s usually better to just shoot both. The effort of precise positioning isn’t worth the minimal extra damage.
