How to Counter Glyphid Praetorians Effectively
Glyphid Praetorians are tough, but focusing their weak points and exploiting their slow turns makes them manageable. Learn their attack patterns to stay safe.
Combat Summary
Dealing with a Glyphid Praetorian requires focus and understanding its vulnerabilities. These armored monstrosities might seem like unkillable ‘tumbleweeds’ to greenbeards, but they have critical weaknesses. Prioritize taking them down quickly before they spray acid or block paths.
- Target the Abdomen: The glowing abdomen is the primary weak point. Focus all fire there. While armored on the front, sustained damage can eventually break through other plates.
- Exploit Slow Turns: Glyphid Praetorians turn slowly. Circle strafing is highly effective. Stay behind them to maintain access to their weak spot and avoid their acid spray.
- Manage Swarms First: Clear out smaller Glyphids around a Praetorian. An isolated Praetorian is far less dangerous and easier to dispatch.
Weak Points and Tactics
Their heavily armored carapace makes direct frontal assaults inefficient. The glowing abdomen, exposed from the rear, is their critical weak point. Explosives or armor-breaking rounds can strip away front armor, but aiming for the back is always best. Their Acid Spray attack has a wind-up; use this time to get clear or reposition. Their charge attack is also telegraphed, offering an easy dodge if you’re paying attention. These are crucial Combat Tips for survival against one of Hoxxes’ most common Hazards.
Class-Specific Advice
- Driller: The Driller excels at close-quarters destruction. Freeze the Praetorian with your Cryo Cannon for massive damage bonuses, then follow up with your drills or Subata. Flamethrower can also cook them, but avoid frontal assaults. This is a key part of effective Driller Tactics.
- Engineer: Deploy Turrets to cover angles and deal sustained damage. The Breach Cutter or PGL are excellent for clearing swarms around the Praetorian or hitting its weak point with area damage. Plasma Burster overclocks for the PGL can strip armor quickly.
- Gunner: Use your Shield Generator to create safe zones for revives or focused fire on the Praetorian. Your minigun, especially with a Lead Storm or A7 overclock, can shred its weak spot or even break armor. The Thunderhead Autocannon is also fantastic for its area damage and armor-breaking potential. Learn precise Gunner Tactics for when to deploy your shield.
- Scout: While the Scout often focuses on smaller targets, you can still contribute. Flare the area for visibility, then use your grappling hook to rapidly reposition and hit the Praetorian’s weak spot with your M1000 Classic or Deepcore GK2.
Common Mistakes
Miners often panic and unload clips into the Praetorian’s armored front, wasting ammo. Standing directly in front of them during their acid spray wind-up is also a death sentence. Don’t underestimate their melee attack, especially in tight tunnels. Always prioritize mobility and positioning in an Enemy Guide of this caliber.
When Praetorians Are Toughest
Praetorians become significantly more dangerous in tight spaces or when accompanied by large swarms. When faced with multiple Praetorians, especially on higher Hazard levels, consider retreating to more open ground if possible. Avoid getting cornered or letting them surround your team.
