Deep Rock Galactic: How to Recover Lost Save Data

Combat Summary

Losing progress is worse than a Glyphid Swarm, especially if you’ve poured hundreds of hours into the depths. If your Deep Rock Galactic save data is gone due to a crash or power outage, here’s the drill:

  • Check Local Backups First: The game often creates local save backups. Your primary recovery should start there, not with Management’s support tickets.
  • Verify Steam Cloud: If local fails, the Steam Cloud might hold an older, restorable version of your Save Data.
  • Prevent Future Loss: Regularly back up your save files manually to avoid catastrophic Progress Loss from unexpected shutdowns.

Common Causes

Unexpected power loss or game crashes are the most frequent culprits for corrupting save files or causing the game to load an old profile. This isn’t just a minor Technical Issue; it means losing your hard-earned ranks, gear, and Overclocks. Sometimes, a faulty game update or antivirus interference can also prevent the game from properly writing or reading save files.

Recovery Protocol

Before you panic, follow these steps to attempt recovery:

  1. Locate Save Files: Navigate to C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Saved Games\Deep Rock Galactic. You’re looking for FSD or Saved folders.
  2. Backup Existing Saves: Before doing anything else, copy the entire contents of this folder to a separate, safe location. This prevents accidental overwrites.
  3. Check Local Backups: Inside the Saved Games\Deep Rock Galactic folder, there might be a subfolder named Saved or SavedGames. Look for files like DRG_Player.sav or similarly named backups with a timestamp. You might find several. Copy the most recent one (before the incident) and overwrite the current DRG_Player.sav in the primary save location.
  4. Force Steam Cloud Sync: If local backups don’t work, disable Steam Cloud Sync for Deep Rock Galactic in Steam settings. Delete the local save file (DRG_Player.sav). Re-enable Cloud Save and launch the game. Steam should prompt you to choose between local and cloud files; select the cloud version. Be warned: the cloud version might also be an older, but functional, save.
  5. Launch and Verify: Start Deep Rock Galactic and check if your progress has returned. If successful, immediately exit and restart to ensure the new save is properly written.

Preventing Future Loss

The best defense against losing progress is proactive backup. Before major play sessions or after unlocking significant milestones (Promotions, new Overclocks), manually copy your Deep Rock Galactic save folder (typically C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Saved Games\Deep Rock Galactic) to an external drive or cloud storage service. While Management relies on their systems, a Greybeard knows to trust their own preparation.
