Deep Rock Galactic: How to Avoid Stingtail Grabs as a Scout

Avoid Stingtail grabs as a Scout by staying low and listening for audio cues. Getting pulled while airborne can be a fatal mistake during critical moments near the Drop Pod.

Combat Summary

  • Minimize airborne exposure when a Stingtail is confirmed or suspected to be active.
  • Prioritize eliminating the Stingtail immediately upon identification, especially near objectives or during extraction.
  • Use the Scout’s Grappling Hook for evasive maneuvers after a Stingtail’s audio cue, not as general travel when they’re present.

Management might label getting pulled mid-air as a “miner error,” but we know better. The Stingtail is a hazard specifically designed to punish mobility, making it a critical threat for any Scout who relies on verticality. Getting yanked into a swarm or off a cliff while grappled is a fast trip back to the Medical Bay. This isn’t a “bug,” lads, it’s a feature of the deepest hells of Hoxxes IV, and you need to adapt.

Stingtail Threat Assessment

The Stingtail is an opportunistic ambush predator. Its primary attack is a long-range tongue grab that pulls Miners towards it, often into other threats or off ledges. This is particularly lethal for a Scout already airborne with the Grappling Hook, as the grab animation often overrides your momentum and leaves you disoriented. Their distinctive shriek and “thwip” sound effect are your first warning. Learn them.

Scout Mobility Counterplay

The key to surviving Stingtail encounters as a Scout is calculated use of your Scout Mobility tools:

  • Stay Grounded: When you hear a Stingtail, keep your feet on the ground. Avoid unnecessary long-distance grapples across open spaces or over deep pits.
  • Evasive Grapple: If you must grapple and hear the shriek, use a quick, short grapple to a nearby surface after the initial grab attempt. You can sometimes dodge the tongue.
  • Spot and Shoot: Your high mobility allows you to quickly reposition. Use it to get an angle on the Stingtail and eliminate it before it can strike. Focus weak points.

Tactical Prioritization

A live Stingtail is a top-tier threat. When one appears, especially during high-stress situations like swarms, point extraction, or the final dash to the Drop Pod, it must die. Fast. Your team needs to focus fire. Failure to do so will result in lost time, downed Miners, and potentially a failed mission. This is crucial for effective Hazard Management.

Common Mistakes

  • Over-reliance on Airtime: Treating the Grappling Hook like a free pass in Stingtail territory.
  • Ignoring Audio Cues: The shriek is your alarm. Don’t ignore it.
  • Not Communicating: Ping the Stingtail for your team; they might not see it, especially if it’s high up.
