Bulk Detonator Guide: Tactics for the Walking Bomb

Learn how to effectively deal with a Bulk Detonator, one of the most dangerous enemies on Hoxxes IV. Master its weaknesses to protect your team and mission.

Combat Summary

Dealing with a Bulk Detonator requires immediate attention and coordinated fire. These walking bombs are rare but deadly, easily wiping out an unprepared team and destroying objectives.

  • Prioritize Weak Points: Focus all available firepower on the glowing yellow-orange sacks to bring it down quickly and minimize its movement.
  • Maintain Distance: Always keep your distance. Its final explosion, especially, is massive and instantly lethal if you’re caught in the blast radius.
  • Kite Aggressively: Lure the Bulk Detonator away from critical objectives and narrow tunnels into open areas where your team has room to maneuver.

Best Engagement Tactics

When this abomination spawns, your primary goal is to eliminate it safely and swiftly. It’s a high-priority target that demands immediate tactical adjustments. Clear any surrounding smaller Glyphids first to prevent them from interfering, then concentrate all fire on the Detonator. Driller-made tunnels can offer temporary cover or a path for kiting, while Engineer platforms can create vantage points or block its path briefly. Use terrain to your advantage, especially ledges or deep pits, to slow its advance.

Weak Points and Damage

The Bulk Detonator’s glowing yellow-orange sacks are its main vulnerability. Direct hits to these weak points deal significantly more damage. While it’s resistant to most explosive damage from sources like Grenade Launchers or C4, direct impact damage from bullets, pellets, or energy weapons is highly effective against its sacks. Freezing it temporarily with Cryo Cannon or grenades can halt its movement, making its weak points easier to target, though it will still detonate when defeated.

Common Mistakes

Many Miners underestimate the threat of a Bulk Detonator. Panicking and running in unpredictable directions often leads to teammates getting caught in its initial attack or final explosion. Never let it get close to the Drop Pod, Extraction Point, or a critical objective. A common error is not calling out its appearance, leaving a portion of the team unaware. Failing to clear smaller enemies around it can lead to getting swarmed and cornered, making escape from the Detonator impossible. Remember, even after its main explosion, smaller secondary explosions scatter across the ground, posing a lingering Hazard Management threat.

Miner’s Chatter

Community feedback consistently highlights the sheer terror and adrenaline rush of encountering a Bulk Detonator. Many Miners stress the importance of clear communication, with ‘Bulk!’ being the universal distress call. There’s often discussion about the best way to leverage its explosion—either killing it far from objectives or, in desperate situations, luring it to clear out a dense swarm. Some veteran Miners swear by freezing it, while others argue for sheer, focused DPS. The consensus for Combat Tips is always: don’t get greedy, maintain distance, and focus fire.
